LPC Unveils Work Of Art

06/03/2007

The LPC Group, the UK's largest independently owned manufacturer of tissue paper, has unveiled a unique new sculpture at its Rothley Lodge site in Leicestershire. The stone and steel creation was commissioned in association with Charnwood Council's 'Per cent for Arts' scheme, which is aimed at enriching the local landscape through public art. The sculpture's ten foot form was inspired by the layering of paper tissue products and stands overlooking the paper manufacturing site near Mountsorrel.

The final stage of installation will involve the artist, Alyn Mulholland, helping local school children to engrave their own designs into the stone base of the statue, as he explains:

"In preparation for the building work an archaeological dig was carried out and a number of artefacts were found of historical significance. I have run a couple of workshops with a local school explaining this and the concept behind the strata effect of the top half of the sculpture; i.e. it relates to the layering of the paper products made in LPC's factory. Now the children will come up with ideas inspired by the site for images to be carved onto the base. I'm really pleased with how the sculpture has turned out, and can't wait to finish it off with the help of the kids."

LPC is also delighted at how the sculpture has turned out, as Manufacturing Director Karim Tejani confirms:

"We are really pleased with the concept and look of the sculpture, and hope that visitors and passers-by will be equally impressed. LPC has sites across Europe and Scandinavia and this is the first with its own external art installation, but there's no reason why it should be the last. Industrial sites can sometimes be a bit dull, and livening up the surroundings with interesting pieces like this can only be a good thing for everyone."
