The success of Sainsbury's recent nation-wide promotion to raise awareness of responsible resource management was made possible by the manufacturing and logistical efficiency of the LPC Group. Sainsbury's, recently named the country's 'greenest supermarket' by the Independent newspaper, decided to hand out free packs of its Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) approved own label toilet tissue in order to demonstrate its commitment to the environment, and called LPC in to help make it happen.
LPC, which provides Sainsbury's with its own label toilet tissue, is at the forefront of the FSC campaign to ensure that any virgin pulp used in the industry comes from forests that are responsibly managed. It produced 2.2 million environmentally friendly toilet rolls at its sites in Leicester in only four weeks for the promotion, and then managed their distribution over three days using over 130 trucks. Although a great success, the project was not an easy task, as Neville Stark, Sainsbury's primary contact at the LPC Group, explains:
"We were delighted to be able to help Sainsbury's deliver a promotion highlighting the paper making and retail industries' responsibilities to help the planet – but it was hard work! We had a very short timescale to turn things around and the manufacturing managers showed amazing flexibility to be able to re-jig schedules to fit in such a big order. As a group we are dedicated to ensuring our activities have as little impact on the environment as possible, so working with the FSC and retailers in this way really helps us achieve our goals in terms of corporate and social responsibility."
As well as two large sites in Leicester, the LPC Group also operates across continental Europe. It has recently added to its base in Sweden by acquiring mills in Roanne, France, and Duffel, Belgium. These sites now allow LPC to offer retailers all over Europe the same high levels of product quality and service recently enjoyed by Sainsbury's in the UK.
